Monthly CO2 report from Mauna Loa.  The average level in September was 2.4 ppm above the same month a year ago, with all those wildfires possibly contributing.  That’s not good, but the longer term trend, as displayed by the black line, remains well within its usual course.  That means the average ppm gain for the full year should be a little less than 2.4.

Ocean heat content is rapidly rising.  “Global warming” is best defined and measured by the total change in heat content of the world’s oceans.  This chart, based on depths down to 2000 meters, is indicative of a serious acceleration of the warming trend that has been in effect for the last half century.   The post also has a chart of the change in sea level, where a relatively steady rate of increase has had quite a bounce above trend in just the last six months.

How the cost of renewable energy is gaining on fossil fuels.  A lot of solid-looking information has been gathered by Bloomberg.  There are still large variations from region to region, accounted for in the report.  I don’t think the general public has any idea of how much the cost competition has tightened up in just the last few years, or it would more inclined to show support for a more rapid transition.

The IPCC now has a new chief, Dr. Hoesung Lee.  This post contains a September interview with Dr. Lee which should give you a pretty complete understanding of how the organization functions and its mission.  This is a very conservative operation, dedicated to scientific accuracy, and that is not likely to change.

An update on the SimpliPhi Power battery development.  This company and its remarkable innovations were first mentioned in Climate Letter #484.  Here is more information, which leads one to believe it will be a strong competitor in residential and commercial battery storage markets, perhaps more.
