Climate Letter #510

Climate change is now a political campaign theme in the US.  This review, from The Scientific American,  suggests that Democrats now see climate action as a way to win votes.  Public opinion has been shifting toward more favorables, and the degree of conviction has been firming up enough to make it a real issue when voting.

The possibility of abrupt climate change is covered in a new research study.  History is replete with situations of abrupt climate change of extreme proportions, generally associated with the complicated movements of vast continental ice sheets.  The current situation, while different, still offers potential for a number of abrupt changes, many of which could occur with global warming of less than 2C.

A review of the ocean acidification problem, by two top scientists, as published in the NY Times.  The  problem is profound and rapidly growing.  The solution is exactly the same as the answer prescribed for climate change.

A summary of data covered by over 600 published reports from scientists concerning the marine environment.  Among the findings, phytoplankton will thrive on the warmer water and extra carbon supply, but the zooplankton and small fish that eat them will be decimated by acidification, thereby causing a major break in the marine food chain.  Human populations, at the top of this same chain, will be adversely affected.  There is much more to the report, mainly discouraging.

A troubling development in the UK.  Solar energy installation, along with thousands of jobs, is being killed off by unwarranted government action.  This involves the surprisingly abrupt termination of subsidies, believed to be inspired by certain powerful lobbying groups.  The growth of renewables cannot be stopped in the long run, but there are ways to slow it down with obstructions that an alert society should not be willing to tolerate.
