Climate Letter #465

Update on Earth’s “ecological deficit.”  Humans are using up resources that cannot quickly be replenished.  Each year that happens at an earlier date, increasing the drawdown of the existing (and limited) cushion of reserves.  Overshoot began in the early 1970s.  The desire to increase both populations and living standards is getting ever-harder to accommodate.

Pledges for emissions cuts by rich nations are falling short.  The goal has been set at 50% average reductions from 2010 to 2030, but pledges are on track for just 30%.  Most of the “soft targets” for cutting have been used up, or already accomplished, making it more difficult to proceed.

A Bill Maher interview with Dr. Michael Mann.  The most important point in this brief video is that it is hard for political leaders to get things done, especially in a democracy, without strong support from the people.  We see lots of support for climate action when polls are taken but it is too weak to mean anything.  People have too many other demands that are quite a bit stronger, and many of those unfortunately do not just drown out but are in actual conflict with climate action.

A small reminder about ocean beaches.  Ocean beaches are popular with all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons, which go well beyond those of local residents.  If sea level rises five or six feet in coming decades they will essentially all disappear with respect to their present form, and the cost of restoration is essentially prohibitive.  It would be quite a different kind of world.
