Climate Letter #1168

India is already having problems due to extreme heat.  Though still early in the season, temperatures have been as high as 111F in some regions and violent storms have become common, resulting in over 100 fatalities.  India sits on the same latitude as the Shara and Arabian deserts, which is not too comfortable a spot, but still supports a dense population by virtue of its heavy monsoon rainy season.

How Arctic have been warming.  Temperature measurements taken at the northernmost point in Greenland over the years tell the story:  “In the month of February, since 1981, it has been rare for hourly air temperatures to spike above freezing. In 1997 it happened once. In 2011 it happened five times, and in 2017 it happened seven times. This year, it happened 59 times.”  Just recently another spike has occurred that was thirty degrees above normal.  The loss of sea ice by itself causes additional warming.

New information about the role of insects and fungal pathogens in forest mortality.  The first comprehensive large-scale study of this type was surprised to find “that in the United States between 1997 and 2015, insects and pathogenic infections resulted in at least as much carbon release as forest fires.”  Warming temperatures were an important reason behind the spread of destructive agents, particularly bark beetles.  The resulting CO2 emissions from dead trees create a feedback loop that adds yet more impetus to the global warming problem.  https://massivesci.com/articles/forest-insects-fires-carbon-warming/

Hurricanes are strengthening more rapidly now than they were thirty years ago.  The reason actually has more to due with a natural cyclical phenomenon known as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation than with the trend of global warming, but in any case it involves the amount of heat available in the upper layers of the ocean.  The waters of the North Atlantic experience periodic long-term cycles of warming and cooling in different locations for reasons that are not well understood.

A new study seeks to explain the close connection between conservatism and climate denial in the US.  The connection is not natural and not as strong in any other of 24 countries studied with the exception of Australia.  This story by Graham Readfearn, writing for The Guardian, provides many insights into how the relationship works, involving conspiracy ideas, and how it has been successfully promoted by special interests.

Results of a poll of US voters about global warming taken by a program at Yale.  While the questions are different, this one shows a surprising contrast from the Gallup poll reported here yesterday with respect to the differences between the parties.  Among Republicans there is a wide gap between conservatives and the liberal or moderate types.
