Climate Letter #312

The path Denmark has taken. This has not gotten much publicity over the years, but Denmark’s achievements to date may be unmatched by those of any other country. Perhaps the Danes are lacking a fossil fuel lobby that could warn the people against the folly of such errant behavior? And, are not the common citizens now suffering from deprivation? There is a chart included in this story that shows global wind power capacity on a steady growth trend, doubling about every four or five years. Not too shabby.

Evidence of past sea level rise. This study reveals a rise of 20-30 feet during the last interglacial period, when temperatures were topping out at a peak equal to that which we will soon be reaching. To do their tests, the authors picked a location that is known to have minimum exposure to verticle crust movement, which could otherwise affect the accuracy of the global representation of sea level data.

What does it mean if all that fuel is unburnable? This post provides some expert opinion with a variety of perspectives. It is clearly a concept that cannot be viewed lightly, but is equally hard for some to take seriously because so much is at stake on both sides. Ultimately, who would be able to take responsibility for enforcing limits, in every corner of the globe, so why should Exxon be worried? .

How big energy is responding. This piece is rather long, but well-written, and right on point. You should become familiar with these arguments because they will be repeated endlessly and the weaknesses are not easy to spot. The points are forceful and backed by elements of historical truth that most people can readily understand. Moreover, the audience that is willing to listen is not small. The underlying assumption is that the desire for immediate affluence is not only real but easily trumps the fear of distant dangers that are hard to prove. To a large degree, people who lack affluence want it when they see it and people who have affluence tend to want more. Both groups can easily be persuaded by these arguments, which many politicians find effective as well. Oh, there is no mention that growth on a finite planet cannot be unlimited, or that we could be getting very close to that line, if not already beyond.
