Climate Letter #857

How California is defying the Trump administration on climate action.  This inspiring article was written for Yale E360 by Jacques Leslie, an author noted for his eloquence.  “Even as California faces regulatory headwinds from the Trump administration, it is riding strong economic and technological tailwinds that favor its goals of weaning its economy off fossil fuels.”  The sense of dedication among public officials is remarkable. http://e360.yale.edu/features/in-the-face-of-trump-environmental-rollback-california-stands-in-defiance?

Renewable energy developments reported by BNEF.  The headline goes to Saudi Arabia, which is taking major steps toward converting its own economy to wind and solar power.  There follows a summary of other important news and views from around the world that are worth noting.                                                                                             http://reneweconomy.com.au/saudi-arabia-makes-first-steps-10gw-renewable-energy-rollout-19679/?

Unprecedented drought conditions now experienced in Somalia (Voice of America).  The story is mostly about the massive perishing of livestock, the most critical resource for survival of more than six million people.  The rainy season is expected to arrive in April, but the last two of these have failed.                                                                http://www.voanews.com/a/somalia-faces-unprecedented-drought/3732497.html

A spectacular view of the crack in the Larsen C ice shelf.  See the one-minute video and read about why this event causes so much concern.  “Ice shelf health is a key metric researchers are watching all around Antarctica. The shelves act like bookends, holding up the massive stores of ice on the continent.”                                http://www.climatecentral.org/news/scientists-larsen-c-crack-21178

The overall cooling impact of aerosol particles in the atmosphere is still not well known.  Researchers are trying to get a better handle on this open question that has great importance for climate forecasting.  “You have warming effect caused by greenhouse gasses and the cooling effect caused by aerosols, and climate change is basically the difference between the two.”  From all I have read the best estimate is that if we clean the air by stopping the burning of fossil fuels the global temperature would rise by about 0.5C, possibly more, with practically no delay.  That could possibly be avoided with some complicated geoengineering, which would be costly and basically only a temporary fix, perhaps undesirable for other reasons.                                            https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/22/antarctic-study-examines-impact-of-aerosols-on-climate-change

The cost of nuisance flooding in coastal communities caused by high tides is expected to keep rising.  The cumulative cost effect of damage done by repeated episodes is already being compared to that of single extreme events, with sea level rise just getting started.       https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2017-02/uoc–otn022117.php
