Climate Letter #847

A poll of those who voted for Trump shows surprising concern for climate change and the need to act.  This tells us that the government now in place does not properly represent Republican voters, much less the entire public.  It also tells us that climate change was not a high priority issue for most of those voters, as predicted earlier by many other polls.  We can further surmise that big oil has been hugely successful in its efforts to gain control of the party’s officeholders, using powers of persuasion we can only guess at.  The voters themselves included many Independents who no doubt had an effect on the poll results.  (The post has a link to the full report.)

It is worth mentioning that a different poll, also quite recent, on similar subject matter but with fewer respondents, came up with results somewhat less supportive to feelings about climate action among Republican voters.  Here are the figures:
Note:  I believe that the new administration’s highly aggressive behavior that is contrary to majority opinion toward climate action will stir up a level of reaction that will give the issue much more weight in the next election, less than two years away.  That prospect needs to quickly become more visible, as a way of restraining the immediate damage.

The right-wing media is promoting a new scientific “scandal.”  You may have seen or heard the story, based on the claims of a whistleblower, and wondered about how we can be sure that what we are told about climate climate change is true.  This post has coverage of the relevant circumstances that should be helpful.  There is similarity to the fully debunked “climategate” scandal of a few years back that served as a serious setback for those seeking changes.  The motivation and tactics of those doing the current misrepresentation has not changed.

Climate change is wrecking some of Britain’s most valuable treasures.  This well-illustrated article in the Guardian focuses on storm damage to historic sites and losses of wildlife, clearly attributed to recent changes in climate conditions.

A major improvement in the structure of zinc-air batteries.  The new version provides much-needed stability for a key component.  “Zinc-air batteries are one of the most promising solutions for the large-scale storage of intermittently-generated renewable electricity from solar, wind or tidal: they are non-flammable, inexpensive and with a very high energy density.”

New research into the rehabilitation of life in the soil (not a climate story).  This short piece is worth reading just because it adds so much to one’s general understanding of the workings of a vital ecosystem, one that needs whatever help we are able to offer.
