Climate Letter #843

A new material has been developed that can maximize the harvesting of solar energy.  This story gives the impression of credibility, but the details are frustratingly sketchy.  I like the comment about “devices that could more than triple solar cell efficiencies.”  At the end of the post you will find a section about Related Stories from a year or two ago which cover similar types of research done elsewhere, along with more details, that are just as exciting.  I believe there is potential in this area of investigation for really fast-tracking the needed transition to renewable energy.

A cheaper way to capture carbon dioxide from exhaust streams has been found by researchers in India.  The cost of capture is about $30 per ton, and could be further reduced.  The CO2 can then be usefully processed into other products that have commercial value, more of which would likely be needed to facilitate widespread adoption of the capture method.

Why environmentalists have an issue with Trump’s Supreme Court pick.  It comes down to very basic questions about who should have final control over the content of government regulations, some of which are undoubtedly bad while others provide important benefits that are of public interest but are most clearly apparent only to people with expert knowledge.  It is an area that needs help from constitutional law, the making of which has never been settled once and for all.  The Congress and administration we now have seem intent on rewriting all regulations in favor of big business, which some justices may think is allowable simply because those in control have all been elected.

Relative to the above story, Trump’s actions suggest a willingness to forcefully withhold the kind of information that genuine experts could relate to the public as justification for the way regulations (or other laws) are written.  Is that a legally established right?  Are there any limits?

A quick summary of some important milestones in the history of life on Earth.  There is some new information about how and when the present level of oxygen in the atmosphere came to be, finally allowing animal life to exist on land.  Modern humans, while new on the scene, have taken over responsibility for making future changes to the history of life.
Extra comment:  Animal life in the oceans existed much earlier than on land, as noted, even before the “Cambrian explosion” of 542 million years ago.  There is a fairly new theory that the Cambrian explosion was prompted by the relatively sudden evolution and subsequent fossilization of hard shells by all existing phyla, which were needed as a means of defense against certain animals that had previously developed the advantage of eyesight for making their predatory rounds.
