Climate Letter #788

Global emissions growth from burning fossil fuels has flattened out.  The main reason for this is the sharp pivot made by China as it cuts back on the use of coal for energy.  The growth in CO2 content of the atmosphere has meanwhile accelerated, mainly because of changes involving human land use and the natural absorption rate of land and ocean sinks, hopefully temporary, new details of which are not yet readily available.  The two graphs made for this post need to be seen.

Solar cells are now being made that combine perovskite material with silicon.  The result is a considerable increase in the efficiency of a silicon cell by way of the simple addition of one more inexpensive layer.  It’s a good idea that raises the bar for whatever cell makeup is the ultimate winner, which is far from being decided.
