Severe flooding has also been reported in many parts of Asia, due to a stronger than normal monsoon season.  Literally millions of people have been temporarily displaced.
—–
A different kind of coral reef mortality event in the Gulf of Mexico, the cause of which is still undetermined.  Unusually high water temperatures have undoubtedly contributed.

The surprising way that climate change is having an impact on Lake Tahoe.  The average water temperature of this large and very deep lake has been rapidly rising for the last four years, by an amazing 0.48F in 2015 alone.  A sharp reduction in annual snowfall is at least part of the reason.  The warming is shown to have many unhealthy side effects.

Technology followup.  See Friday’s Climate Letter for the story about using the energy of the sun to turn CO2 into fuel.  This post has more information about what steps are involved in the process.  The first objective, which is the difficult part, is converting CO2 into CO, or carbon monoxide.  Once this is accomplished, which the researchers say they can do successfully, the CO can easily be converted into a useful fuel.  There is nothing said yet about the projected actual cost of the whole process.  Even if the value of the fuel does not fully cover that cost this could still result in being the cheapest known way to quickly and cleanly remove large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.  Within a decade or so that is exactly what everyone will desperately be looking for, so wish these people well.
