Climate Letter #518

An update on the problem of Indonesia’s fires.  Indonesia has experienced the worst deforestation on the planet, and this is playing a critical role in global climate change.  The fires make things worse because of emissions thereby delivered from the underlying high-carbon soil.  As well, the smoke is more than a minor nuisance.

Fossil fuel companies are facing a risk of multiple lawsuits.  This story from a UK newspaper has created a buzz.  The suits, which are almost sure to start soon, might be not unlike those that once plagued the asbestos and tobacco companies, but in this case there are potentially far more points of attack.  Along the way there will be some interesting arguments over the nature of evidence and assessment of responsibility.  (The previous story, for example, suggests that blame for damages extends well beyond fossil fuel burning.)

A forecast of increases in the planet’s dryland area.  This study was provided by a university in China, showing a potential increase from the current 40% to about 56% of total land area by 2100 if emissions continue to rise.  The key observation is that warming trends are found to be greater over dryland areas than humid regions, which is consistent with many understandings based on theory and modeling.

Historic high-tide flooding on the Southeast coast of the US.  Spurred by extraordinary sea level rise the problem has steadily become worse, comparable in depth to hurricane flooding.  ” NOAA reports that less destructive, “nuisance” flooding has increased by 400 percent in Charleston since the 1960s alone.  And the future is even wetter.”  Lots of convincing pictures.

Another way to greatly magnify the efficiency of solar cells.  This story should interest anyone who is familiar with quantum mechanics.  Wonderful idea, but still some basic research remains to be done on the practical side.
