Climate Letter #861

Communication related to this week’s Biological Extinction workshop in the Vatican.  This material provides an extensive summary of how the problem evolved, putting events since 1970 in sharp contrast with longstanding historical records.  The church accepts the validity of outside research indicating that humans are currently consuming resources far in excess of Earth’s capacity for replenishment while yet demanding much more.  This is happening, and must be resolved, apart from any consideration of the effects of climate change.  Climate change adds a weakening effect to the biological resources that humans depend on.

He may tell about the most common discount viagra greyandgrey.com myth that stops people running their relationship even when reaching middle age. —–Extra comment:  Fossil fuels, in addition to being the main cause of climate change, have also provided the vast amount of cheap energy that enabled the creation of extraordinary levels of resource consumption in the developed world.  If we now succeed in completely replacing fossil fuels with clean energy that is just as cheap and even more abundant, how does that help to solve the problem of overconsumption of all resources other than fossil fuels?

New research into the outlook for sustainability, very relevant to the Vatican conference.  The authors include scientists from a number of different disciplines that are seeking to improve their respective system models by incorporating two-way interactions between the disciplines that are not being recognized at this time.  According to Michael Mann, who was not an author, “We cannot separate the issues of population growth, resource consumption, the burning of fossil fuels, and climate risk. They are part of a coupled dynamical system, and, as the authors show, this has dire potential consequences for societal collapse. The implications couldn’t be more profound.”  There is a link to the full report, with open access.

A bit of good news from China.  Coal consumption in 2016 fell for the third straight year and solar development doubled.  Total emissions from all fossil fuels are in a downtrend, including projections for 2017.

Shell Oil issued a strong warning against the dangers of climate change many years ago.  “The company’s farsighted 1991 film, titled Climate of Concern, set out with crystal clarity how the world was warming and that serious consequences could well result.”  Shell knew all about  the consequences as early as 1986, revealed in an internal report.

Another sign that electric car sales are ready to take off in the US.  The ethanol lobby and oil lobby have always been enemies, fighting for shares of the auto fuel market.  Now they are joining forces as they both see that the threat from electrics is real.
