Climate Letter #495

Some  astute points about climate change being emphasized by the pope.  These could only be arrived at through very deep study, based on information and principles that are universally acceptable.

Coral reef damage is continuing.  This report from WWF is not encouraging.  The size of the human populations that may be affected is staggering.  Holding down global temperature gains would help change this outlook.

What about the cold surface water anomaly in the North Atlantic?  Opinion is growing that it represents a slowing of important circulation patterns, probably caused at least in part by an influx of cold, fresh meltwater from Greenland.  Consequences may be felt in the climate of Northern Europe and also in the way ocean waters circulate globally, with deep layers being involved.
Extra comment:  Please open the Climate Reanalyzer at http://cci-reanalyzer.org/DailySummary/#  and click on sea surface anomalies.  It looks to me like the warm Gulf Stream has been dammed up in a way that causes some of the water to press against the shores of North America and some to be switched to a more southerly path toward Africa.  Also note that the big cool anomaly is at precisely the same latitude and northeast position as the “warm blob” anomaly over in the Pacific, yet when you switch to a chart showing real temperatures for both surfaces they now look to be about equal.  How strange!
