Climate Letter #326

Australia’s dire climate outlook. Many past studies have warned that Australia was in greater danger than any other developed region as a consequence of global warming. Now a new and more comprehensive study has been published which confirms this projection with more detail and greater confidence. A temperature increase between 2.8 and 5.1C is projected by 2090. (The rest of the world will not be far behind.) How strange that the Australian government is the most backward of all when it comes to resisting rather than seeking mitigation. Of course they do have a powerful coal lobby.

A 3-D map of Greenland’s ice sheet. This short video is fascinating, and highly instructive. I find it interesting that there is so little evidence of any ice left over from previous ice sheet expansions, which is completely unlike the drilling evidence in Antarctica. This tells me that almost the entire current ice sheet on Greenland is capable of melting away with just a little more warming. The Eemian is believed to have peaked at temperatures 1-2C warmer than current.

Update on drought conditions in Sao Paulo. As I read it, rationing would cut offf water supply five days a week for nearly ten million people. It is not too clear how those affected can be connected to other reservoirs, or whether those reservoirs and their recipients could in turn become seriously depleted. This is sure to be one of the biggest stories of the year, and climate change is very much in play.

A groundbreaking study for climate science. This one is sure to attract attention, showing a very direct and almost immediate connection between global warming and oxygen levels overlying the ocean shelves. The full implications, while unclear, are still unsettling, adding yet another reason for caution toward additional warming.
