Climate Letter #1133

The outlook for “internal migration” due to climate change over the next few decades.  As a companion to cross-border migration it gets less attention but the numbers of people likely to be involved are large and the potential for problems can be great.  A study looks at three major regions that expect the most such activity, now partly inevitable, affecting tens of millions of people, to a degree that depends on how well climate change is controlled.  “The report argues that migration can be a “sensible climate change adaptation strategy” – if it is managed carefully and supported by good development policies and targeted investments.”

Some ideas about what a sustainable planet with many billions of people might look like.  The author bases his concepts on Edward O. Wilson’s call for dedicating half of the planet to the health and well-being of wildlife.  Since the current situation is unsustainable, and must change in one way or another, it’s nice to know there are people who think in terms of visions that are both theoretically attainable and respectful of the realities of biodiversity and its needs.

A timely reminder that the cost of property insurance policies is going to show steep increases.  Insurers had a rough year in 2017 and it looks like this year has started off on the same path of one extreme after another.

Can geoengineering prevent the decline of polar ice sheets?  Proposals for doing so have been advanced, and are illustrated in this post from Peter Sinclair.  “Worthy of discussion, but the scale and possible unforeseen consequences are daunting.”

Another idea about how to deal with climate change, also posted by Peter Sinclair, and much more practical.  There is no geoengineering involved, there are many side benefits, and it will even pay for itself.

An 11-minute video representation of recent disclosures of scientific findings about the way permafrost thawing is speeding up due to rapid warming of the Arctic, and what it means.  It provides more good reasons for avoiding further delays in following seriously active decarbonization programs.  Lots of new information plus photographs of some incredible landscapes.
