Climate Letter #1068

Cloud cover changes are not going to save us from higher temperatures.  This was once a subject of considerable uncertainty in climate science, as explained in this post, a fact often exploited by deniers.  Recent research has built a stronger case that cloud changes will add more to the warming effect as a type of feedback, and thus increase long-term sensitivity to CO2 increases.  The story includes a short video and references to a 2014 study headed by Steven Sherwood that provides strong observational evidence in support of the newer view.

California’s wildfires have an impact far beyond losses to life and property.  This story takes environmental damage into account, including climatic effects.  “A severe fire season lasting only one or two months can release as much carbon as the annual emissions from the entire transportation or energy sector of an individual state.”

A highly favorable report on the outlook for electric trucks (Inside Climate News).  They are hitting the road today because of favorable economics, and that is only likely to get better.  The short-haul market that does not require large batteries is especially ready to take off in a major way.

Batteries made from lithium have potential for performance well beyond current models, at much lower cost.  This report was written by a financial energy specialist.  For transportation purposes lithium should stay in the driver’s seat for quite some time to come, with implications that even extend to air and shipping markets.

Everything you might want to know about microgrids, what they are and the many opportunities for application (Vox).  They are especially able to take advantage of the combined improvements in technologies governing free renewable sources of energy and the flexibility of advanced storage systems.

Ancient Rome was badly weakened by natural climate changes and disasters.  That is the theme of an interesting new book, published by Princeton University Press, reviewed in this post.  There are some good lessons about the dangers of changing and expanding on a scale that causes a loss of resilience to such events.

Science journalist Jeff Goodell has written a new book about the potential human impact of sea level rise.  Here he writes for the Guardian about what prompted him to write this book and how he gathered the information.
