Climate Letter #1066

Followup to yesterday’s lead story about sea level projections.  This article has an excellent explanation of many of the interesting points made in the research study, which go well beyond the early headlines.  For example there are references to other studies (e.g. DeConto and Pollard) about the potential instability of the ice shelves that hold back the big glaciers.  “You could have these ice shelves break up really suddenly… We’ve seen these happen in the past.”  The main study, which has an all-star cast of authors, “finds a median sea level rise projection of 4 feet and 9 inches during the 21st Century if greenhouse gas emissions remain on their current high trajectory.”

From National Geographic, an article that has many insights into the past behavior of the Antarctic ice sheet, with references to yet another study just now published plus other relevant commentaries.  The study has special access at the link below and I can see at once that it is full of meat and deserving of a close look.  Robert DeConto, who was not an author, made this comment—“There is one concerning thing about the new results. During much of the time that Antarctica was repeatedly losing so much ice off its topside, levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were similar to what they are today – perhaps only a little higher. By the end of the century, we’re going to be climbing way outside of that range.”  The study contains charts of the data he is referring to.

When the temperature is rising, the number of daily new highs will outpace that of new lows.  Here is a chart and some statistics that show how this has developed in the US over the years since 1930:

Electronic waste has quickly become a major component of the global pollution threat.  This story has many key statistics and projections.  There is truly a lot that needs cleaning up besides carbon.  When will be the best time to take a break from mindless economic growth so we can focus on putting our house back in order?
