Climate Letter #792

An introduction to the Climate Vulnerable Forum.  This represents a group of 47 developing countries that are literally fighting for their survival, pushing hard to keep the 1.5C limit on the table.  The group is setting its own agenda for action, in front of and tighter than those of the entire body of UN conference signatories, which could serve as a model for other countries to voluntarily support.  This helps by putting a visible face on what the entire project is all about, especially emphasizing the urgency factor.

A realist talks about the nature of the Paris agreement and the future of global energy demand.  Fatih Birol is the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), aka “the world’s energy watchdog,” which is devoted to more than one kind of data-driven analysis.  They analyze trends in energy demand and also the various things being said or done that may or may not cause those trends to change.  He has recently made some remarks that strike me as  unusual and refreshing from the standpoint of realism.  For example, “Governments come and go around the world. This is a perfectly normal thing, and energy policies change with changes in administration. We may well see a change in US policy and, given the size of the US economy, these changes may have global implications. If there are such changes, we will include them in our analysis.”
I plan to spend more time studying reports from this useful organization.  Main website:  http://www.iea.org/

This brief report from Reuters on the Marrakech convention suggests how important the work of the IEA is as a provider of reference markers once goals have been set.  Check out what is said about the size of the challenge facing electric automobiles.

California may be willing to replace the US in UN climate talks if the US quits.  It probably won’t happen, but this is a good example of how Donald Trump is causing reactions that get people to think outside the box. I have the idea that the sum total of those reactions, all over the globe, should actually be more powerful than any unpopular actions that Trump may indulge in.  Moreover, the more such actions he takes the greater will be the scale of reactions, possibly enabling effective accomplishments even sooner than previously expected.

A 28-minute video that characterizes the Anthropocene, or new age of humans.  Produced in Australia, quite informative, well-photographed.

Big claims are being made for Tesla’s new solar roof.  “Electricity is just a bonus.”
