Climate Letter #725

Deluges like the one in Louisiana will become more common as the climate warms.  That prediction does not apply to the total number of similar slow-moving storms, which scientists are not sure about, but it does mean the amount of moisture that is available in the atmosphere and capable of falling out when such storms occur will continue to grow.  That is a simple and unavoidable law of physics.

Peter Wadhams has published a new book.  Wadhams is a well-known senior scientist in the UK who has focused his career on studies of the Arctic.  He also has a reputation for being an outspoken alarmist, often accused of exaggeration.  Regardless, one should be familiar with this man’s opinions even if he is only half right.  He places a good deal of confidence in potential geoengineering solutions that most scientists are doubtful about, which also makes him controversial, but the research he recommends is worth pursuing if it has any chance at all of being helpful at some time.

The number of blue-water lakes appearing on a coastal glacier of East Antarctica has been increasing.  More than just a sign of unusual thawing temperatures, this is worrisome because internal drainage from such lakes can weaken the ice enough to cause a premature collapse.  East Antarctica’s ice sheet is thought to be much more secure than the others, where such lakes are commonly found.

California’s Blue Cut fire is one of the most dramatic wildfires of recent times.  Regardless of its specific cause, multiple studies make climate change responsible for a fire season that has become longer and also more dangerous because of added combination of heat and aridity.

Some interesting commentary on recent US polling results.  Trends are generally moving against the climate change position taken by Republican leadership.  Dana Nuccitelli makes the logical argument that the opposition to the science of climate change is comparable to the previous opposition to gay marriage, has likewise become untenable for the survival of a major political party, and should therefore wither away.  This raises the question of how much reliance the party has on the funding provided by the fossil fuel and related interests, which was not a problem in the case of gay marriage, or anything else of that sort.  Is the funding so large that its potential loss has by itself become crucial to party survival?  Interesting times ahead.
